The search for a new MP for Wycombe began on 3rd September, when CVs from Approved List candidates had to be submitted to CCHQ. Living in Wycombe, and being a former parliamentary candidate, I had thought I would have a chance of at least making the first round of interviews. (I was told that there were over 200 applications so I was realistic about my chances).
The news today that the selection process has been suspended make clear at least two things:
1. I didn't make the original shortlist (blow to my ego)
2. I had better think about how I can get myself on to the next shortlist
A stiff letter to the Bucks Free press could be in order.
If the process has to be run again, why doesn't the Executive Committee lengthen the Short List considerably? This way there will be a lot more than half a dozen candidates for the Selection team to interview and would address the inevitable criticism that the procedure is a "closed shop". (And of course they would have to make sure that lots of the new names are not the obvious local candidates, of course. I live in hope.)
