Take a look at my Publications page for more on the subject but you may not be surprised to know of my support for nuclear energy. I was encouraged to see Ed Milliband confirming earlier this week that 10 new stations would be green-lighted. There may be tax breaks for nuclear energy suppliers (an exemption from the Climate Change Levy) and it seems as if the Government understands that the industry will need long-term support; from supporting universities in their provision of relevant courses to committing to a long-term career offering to professionals employed in the industry.
If only Greenpeace could be brought on board. Their objections are worthy of study (it displaces other sustainable energy, what do we do with the waste?) but all of them are increasingly unconvincing. Guaranteeing prices for other renewable energy suppliers, probably priced attractively relative to nuclear, can deal with the former point; inner space, outer space, underwater and underground solutions will clearly be possible deal with the latter. The total volume of all the nuclear waste ever produced would fit inside one half of a football pitch - there is not that much to get rid of.
